Design Process
The Importance of Design Documents
The design process embodies quality collaboration and clear communication among the instructional designer, SMEs and stakeholders. It is the first deliverable to be agreed upon. The design document includes a high-level statement of the purpose of the course, the problem, and the solution, the target audience, training recommendations, learning objectives, a general outline of the content and assessment pieces. If the learning solution is an Articulate course in Storyline or Rise, or a microlearning sample with audio/visual components, a detailed storyboard is created. This storyboard documents all content, flow, and interactions of the course. Once the design document and storyboard are approved, the project progresses into the development phase.

Design Process
The design process has a distinct beginning, middle and end. However, it's important to understand that the process is iterative, involving multiple rounds of feedback to ensure the final product meets all project requirements and satisfies the client. Here is an overview of my design process.
ANALYSIS
My process begins with a needs analysis, helping to define the target audience and learning objectives while identifying learning gaps.
A kickoff meeting allows me to meet your Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and stakeholders and understand their roles. During the meeting, we will also discuss the organization's goals, review resources, assets, budgets, and establish optimal deadlines.
DESIGN
In the design phase, I provide a high-level project outline. The design document requires approval before proceeding to ensure clear communication. For eLearning development, I also create a detailed storyboard. It too needs approval to ensure clarity.
DEVELOPMENT
Development includes several iterations based on SME and stakeholder feedback. This iterative process enables me to respond effectively to your input as we progress through alpha, beta and final iterations.
IMPLEMENTATION
Once the final deliverable meets your satisfaction, we can begin the training implementation. This may involve deploying an eLearning course through an LMS system or ensuring facilitators are comfortable with an ILT or VILT presentation.
EVALUATION
When a client requests an evaluation, we may review employees' quiz scores, representing Level 2 from Kirkpatrick's Four Levels of Evaluation. The highest level of evaluation assesses the impact of the training on the organization's goals and is often conducted well after implementation.
